Pension Funding Status Can Significantly Impact Borrowing Costs for Municipalities
A new issue brief from SLGE issue brief – How Have Municipal Bond Markets Reacted to Pension Reform? – examines whether state and local borrowing costs have become more sensitive to pensions since the financial crisis, finding that rating agencies have begun to explicitly account for pensions in their methodologies, leading several governments to experience downgrades attributable, in part, to their pension challenges.

Retirement (In)security: Why Financial Literacy Matters
Communications Manager Amber Snowden joined the Kansas League of Municipalities’ Annual Conference in Wichita to participate in a panel discussion on public sector retirement and compensation packages. Following the conference, she wrote a blog for NLC’s CitiesSpeak on the importance of financial literacy education to help public sector workers plan and save for retirement and other lifestyle changes.
