State and Local Government Workforce Survey 2017


This report details the findings of an annual SLGE survey that tracks state and local government trends in a wide range of workforce-related areas: hiring, employment cuts and freezes, retirement, changes to retirement and health benefits, positions that were the hardest to fill, and positions that were in the greatest demand, among others. Key findings for state and local governments in 2017 include:

  • 74 percent reported hiring staff
  • 47 percent hired contract or temporary employees
  • 38 percent shifted more health care costs to employees
  • 24 percent established wellness programs.
